Can I plant potatoes in tub trugs?

Hi, I am new to vegetable growing!I was given two large tub trugs, compost and Charlotte and Desiree potatoes as a birthday present last weekend. I haven't grown potatoes before. Can I grow them in the tub trugs? Do I need drainage holes putting in and how do I chit the potatoes. I'm a complete novice! Thank you

It’s been proven by some people that chitting makes no difference.

I gave a friend some spare pink fir apple seed potatoes and she successfully grew them on her balcony in tubs, having never gown them before, so it can be done. I advised her to buy a small bag of composted manure to mix in with the multi purpose compost, as potatoes like that and sometimes there is not enough nutrients in the mpc to last the course.

I’m growing mine in tub trugs, I drilled some drainage holes. Earlies and second earlies. I didn’t bother to chit and they’re doing well. Will be ready for their first earthing up soon.

    Drainage holes definitely needed.
  • Thank you everyone for your comments, help and advice. I'm going to crack on with the job today. Will plant without chitting and see how it goes. One final question, should the trugs be raised off the ground? Many thanks

It’ll help with drainage. I’ve got mine on bricks.
