HEDGES TO HELP POLLUTION

The gable end of my house is next to the pavement and the whole of my garden is the same. I remember watching Gardeners World which included an interview with a professor from Sheffield who recommended certain species of hedge to help with the pollution coming from adjoining roads. I have not been able to find out what the recommendations were . Can anyone help please?
