Olive tree

Looking for some advice, my dad wants an olive tree but wants to be able to keep it in a pot incase he ever wants to move it. I’m looking at buying him one for Father’s Day but I don’t have any idea of how big the pot needs to be for when the tree is fully grown, or whether it needs any special features! Any advice is appreciated :) Thanks!

We got our olive tree from the Olive Grove Nursery near Oundle. I’m sure they’d be very helpful if you sought advice from them

Here is our tree. The pot it is in comes from the Italian Terrace company in Suffolk. We put lights on it at Christmas but from January to late March it is put in the adjacent summerhouse. A tree this size in a pot this size is manageable but, much bigger, it might be too heavy to move without a porter’s trolley and strong chaps.

  • Thankyou! Do you know the dimensions of your pot? I'm from Dorset so i'm going to go into some of the garden centres around here and ask about :)

Just popped outside to measure it. 17” high and 13” internal diameter at the top of the pot.

  • We have an olive tree that has been growing in the same large terracotta pot for the past 4 years.  We were lucky enough to be able to buy some large pots from a company that were selling them (for charity).  The pots are 3foot tall by 30 inches wide. Can you go to a garden auction or something similar to get hold of a large pot.  It takes two strong people to move the pots though. Your pot is lovely Picidea - here that pot would blow over in the storms we have in the winter months.
