Damaged Ceanothus thyrsiflorus

Hi, one of the branches if my Ceanothus thyrsiflorus has not got any leaves or buds on it. I suspect it is because the branch has a large split in it. Should I just saw this branch off now or should I wait for s particular time? The outer branches off the split branch are fairly brittle so I think it is already dead. Thanks
