Spanish Bluebell invasion

Paul B3Paul B3 Posts: 3,154
Today I dug out literally hundreds of Spanish Bluebells (with bulbs) ; I never realised that they spread by underground 'runners' as well as by seed .
It's no wonder they colonise prolifically .
Unless you have a real affection for this plant , maybe best pot-grown or destroyed completely .

Paul B3 I dug all mine up but an still finding the popping up all over the place. My neighbour said she has got some lovely Bluebells grown in her back garden but doesn't know where they have come from. Oops I didn't tell her>:)

In all my experience over the years , I've never managed to eradicate them completely from any particular job I'm doing . They , like Muscari armeniacum always re-appear .
One has to admire their tenacity I suppose :)

Pulling the leaves off is successful in getting rid of them, depriving the bulbs of nutrition.

I have a small group of bluebells under my window. Even though I have looked at the pictures of the three types I'm still unsure if they are native or hybrid as they do have bells on one side but not as long as the pics I've seen. 🤔
  • I don't get the hatred of the Spanish bluebells. They are very pretty...as long as they don't spread uncontrollably, I find the inherent nativism implied in protecting the purity of the British type rather strange. If you don't live in a rural location, no real threat to wild varieties. But can imagine many would disagree with me, so be it.

I have lots and lots in my new garden appearing too. I think they are rather pretty but going by the the amount of muscari that have spread here, i can see myself digging them out in the future.
