How many tomatoes in this container?

B3B3 Posts: 27,505

The container  is about  a foot  high  and about  14 inches in diameter.
I  would like  to plant sungold  and sweet  million  in  it.  Preferably  both  but  one variety is okay if that's  better
Thanks

There's only room for one tomato plant in there. :)

I thought the sweet million could be planted in hanging baskets so there might be room for more. Oh well. Back to the drawing board. Thanks Dove.

Sweet Million live up to their name,  they grow to at least 6’ tall, would go more but I stop them there, they are absolutely laden with fruits and need a good framework to support them, definitely only one of those in there.   They are not a basket type.
Plants in clay pots need watering more often that plastic so may be wise to bear that in mind.

I mustve picked the wrong one. I'll go with it and plant them somewhere else!

Generally, I want to have 10-12 litres of compost per plant (of course less for smaller hanging basket varieties and more for large tomatoes), so it sounds like this could be OK for two (if the diameter is inner diameter, without the thick edges) but you could have problems with air circulation because of the plants being too close, which means a greater possibility of fungal diseases. You can do two if you are OK with this risk and if you don't mind possible smaller crop per plant. I would probably do two of some bush type that would grow more to the sides and down than up. Last year I had two maskotkas in 40x40x40 wooden planter + one dwarf sunflower, one small chilli pepper and some purple basil.

It is the inside diameter, but I think I'll use the container for something else. I'd envisaged tomatoes tumbling over the sides. I've picked the wrong variety and they weren't cheap. I'll plant them in big pots or in the ground.

I always thought that three plant grow bags didn't look big enough for growing tomatoes in.

Here’s the sweet Million plant, the trusses get very heavy so stake well. I buy these, 22 in the pack so will last you a good few years. They all germinate

OMG I sowed the twelve that came in the packet!  Seed swap thread if they germinate!
