Just reading about coral spot and on ours it is on the healthy trunk of the tree. A number of the branches have died off over the past 12 months and we've cut them out but these branches haven't had the red on them.
If you have had to cut back dying branches, in the last 12 months, it's an indication your shrub may be struggling. The spots may not always be present. Be very careful when disposing and clearing the dead wood as it can transfer into good wood. The pruning saws etc need to be thoroughly cleaned after each cut to limit any spread to other shrubs.
If you have a very aged shrub, it's possible it's spread through small cracks and damaged bark. It's a case of keeping an eye on the branches throughout the year and try to remove areas affected. You want to limit this from going to other areas of your shrub.
