What's digging up my lawn?

I noticed some small patches of dug up earth in my lawn a couple of weeks ago, then today saw some with small round holes in them. The patches of soil are about a couple of inches across and the hole is about the

I think I have them in my lawn, just one hole found in the last few days. Are they likely to cause any problems or can I continue as normal. ......with grass cutting etc. I don't have any children or animals.
