  The leaves have gone brown. I don't recall it flowering last summer but it did have nice green leaves. It would be nice to know what it is and how I should care for it. Thanks.

  It looks to me like an epimedium. Good in dappled shade.

  It is an epimedium. The trick is to cut off all the old leaves in early spring or late winter before it flowers. Then the flowers can be seen easily before the fresh new leaves come up.

  Okay, thanks. I can now read up about it.
  
  It's in a sunny spot (not today though) so maybe it needs to be moved at some point.

  Looks like Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’
  Dead foliage normal this time of the year. Cut off all dead leaves as advised by @Busy-Lizzie.
