A tip for the future - if you're getting seriously into gardening, and if it's possible (we can't see your whole garden), think about widening that border to give you room for more plants. You can produce much better results when you've got more room to play with.
Thanks DampGardenMan I'm a real newbie at the moment and will definitely think about widening the border at some time in the future. The rest of the garden is hard landscaped with slate pieces in the middle and my son made me some sleeper beds which is where you can see the forsythia, I've got a similar one the other side. I'm very grateful for all the help that people have given, everyone has been very welcoming :-)
