Yes you can jump in UpNorth, and I would like to know the answers to your questions too, as I am a complete novice to Phlox I can't help you but perhaps Nulty can?
@Guernsey Donkey2,..@UpNorth,..i think @greenfingers steve,..gave a great description of the requirements for Phlox Subulate and Phlox Paniculate,..seeing you asked me a question about your Phlox and not knowing which Phlox you may have,..these plants are quite sturdy,..be they the low growing Phlox subulate,..or the taller one Phlox paniculate which in my garden has reached 1 Mitre and 30 cm,..in a location where it gets lots of sun but also a period of shade throughout the day,..mine were planted in containers and to be part of a display of tall plants,..you can just see them beginning the bloom season on the top right side of the image,..after a spell they will bloom from top to almost bottom of the stems.
You can see just how tall they grow in a season and bloom for a long time.
So in this location they would be considered in part shade even though they love the sun,..@UpNorth,..you could still move your Phlox though it may not be necessary,..give them a liquid feed of something like Miracle Grow and i am sure they will pick up.
@Guernsey Donkey2 ,..you got a nice gift of your Phlox and though at present you say they look not too good,..plant them out,..water and feed them as mentioned to @UpNorth and your Phlox will hopefully bloom in time.
I would like to be charitable and say yes I did have a nice present of Phlox from my husband but on comparing them to your colourful, majestic and gorgeous looking Phlox I can only say - mine look like rubbish - although delicate and pretty they are not the striking plants that you have. I don't know how long they will flower for but they certainly won't be memorable as yours most definitely are nulty. I would say that my Phlox should have been pinched out before they formed buds and flowers - would you agree and do you think they will flower again this year (or next) if I pinch the long shoots now?

I would just plant them out in the garden as they are,..that's Creeping Phlox you have,..Phlox subulata,..it will spread and produce a mass of blooms so many that you will hardly see the green foliage,..it spreads about 60 cm so spread your plants that much,..as far as height goes,.. they are low growing,..15 cm approx.
Thanks for putting me straight nulty, they just didn't seem to stand up to those shown by other gardeners here, so I wondered just how to treat them. Now I have a name and a description of what to expect of them, then I can plant them in the correct position. I do have some large pots that are crying out for overhanging plants and these Phlox Subulata should fit nicely into them. Thank you for your helpful suggestions.
