Small tree/shrub for lawn

  • If that was my garden, I'd source an impressive urn and fill it with either a canna or a small upright conifer underplanted with colourful tumbling annuals like lobelias and bells. Would make quite a feature of the central location, I like a grand gesture in a garden!

A birdbath?  Low maintenance, attracts birds so great fun watching them. Some of the modern sculptural ones look quite pleasing.  More in keeping with your formal layout perhaps.

If it was mine, I'd have grass there.

You have a nice lawn but that slab would drive me crazy, it would go the first day I would be in the house :) Is there a soil under it or does it hide something (drainage, manhole cover etc.)? I don't like it as a planting space, I would do it as grass and if you want a space for more plants (I would want that), there are better parts of your garden for that.
Wouldn't have thought they're hiding anything.
Dirty Harry, does your comment mean you haven't checked?  If so, lift it up and have a look before you do anything else.

If I had big pockets I’d go for a large contemporary sculpture...I have no sculpture... I have small pockets..😫

I like the idea of an urn or a birdbath. I have a sundial with paving and a small bed around it.

The owners of my previous house concreted a yard over all the drain access points!

Thanks for the input. Think I might just go with replacing it with grass now that I've thought about it. Already have a couple of bird baths.
