Have i killed my magnolia?

In autumn last year, out of necessity, I had to hard prune my magnolia tree. I tried to do it in a way that retained the shape. This year no blossoms. No sign of life. Have I killed it?

  • Magnolias are quite prone to diseases, particularly as they get older.  Unfortunately I think you've pruned too much and at the wrong time of year, so there's a good chance that it's dead.
Hopefully if you just removed all the buds it'll come back to life, maybe some leaves will appear in the next few weeks but I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Don't give up on it yet. They flower from the branch tips so it's not surprising that it hasn't bloomed after a late pruning. It is still early for leaves to be opening in many parts of the UK. No promises but wait a few more weeks before you abandon hope

  • Thanks guys. I’m a bit saddened. Should’ve read up before the brutal amputation. Gonna hold onto the feint glimmer of hope offered up by raisingirl.
