  • They suggest not putting cooked food and especially not protein (meat, fish, dairy etc) as this will attract vermin and will smell as it rots.  Other items to compost have been discussed earlier in this post Wayside, so scroll back or google making compost.

I tip mine into the field across the path and the cows eat it. Have you considered getting a cow?  :D
We have sheep in the field opposite, so would be tempted to give that a go

I'm sorry but I'm outraged! You should NEVER throw rubbish into someone else's field. It can do terrible harm to livestock but even if it didn't it's YOUR rubbish. How would you like the farmer to chuck his rubbish into your property? What's the matter with people? Bag it up and send it to the dump.

Cows might be ok eating cut grass but it can be really bad for other animals. Horses especially shouldn't be fed cut grass.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

If you have a lot of lawn, perhaps get two alpacas.

Yes, what is the matter with people? Coming onto forum's and telling other people off like they are naughty, irresponsible children. Feeding our grass clippings to the cattle was discussed with the livestock owner when we were asking if they would be okay to eat our windfall apples and pears. You may also notice that i did not suggest that the OP did this, i simply made a lighthearted joke about him buying a cow.

Fly tipping is not childish, it's wrong and while you may have obtained permission,  many people could misunderstand. My garden runs beside a field and their animals were poisoned by wicked people who think it's OK to throw their rubbish over. If people like me don't speak out, people like them will continue to harm the countryside. You should have made it completely clear and warned of the harm that can be done. I'm afraid you were irresponsible.

I don't understand,  Lizzie. Do you not think it matters if farm animals are injured? Are you aware that animals are made ill or killed by materials dumped in their fields ? In what way am I not grown up to say that it matters and should be prevented?

I never said fly tipping was childish, i said you were telling me off like i am a naughty child. You still are. Unlike you i don't assume that everyone is an imbecile and needs to be lectured on how to behave. Placing grass clippings on grassland is not ruining the countryside.
