Dead patches on lawn?

Hi there,

There are funny looking patches on my grass. Can anyone identify what this is? Could it be thatching?

thanks for the advice in advance

Thatching is a term used to describe a mass accumilation of dead/cut grass as in mowings, that hasn't decomposed.  The practice of scarifying is a method of loosening this layer up and raking it away and disposing of it.

The photos say a lot.  OK! it could be a fungal attack, but check the pattern.  You have the fence standing on normal turf.  Then this length of damaged turf, suggesting to me some kind of land drainage.  Follow the line.  It is much the same width and distance from the fence line, then it spreads out into a rectangle, possibly a sump.

Might I suggest, taking out a couple of spits of soil and see what's below.  It might be worth your while to actually take out a trench and refill with fresh soil.
  • Looks like fungus or grubs attack. You can reseed the dead patch and aerate the soil. Either way lawn mowing could help monumentally!
