Plants on a train?

I'm taking a 4 hour train in a couple of weeks and I need to take 5 small succulents with me- ranging in size from a 5cm tall cactus to a 15 cm tall jade plant. What would be the best way to transport them safely?

That depends on what else you have to carry.  A basket would seem an obvious container to me if you have a spare hand.

One of those cardboard wine bottle carriers that you can get from supermarkets? Let the plants get a little bit dry before the journey (should be fine for succulents) or pop a small plastic bag over the bottom of  each pot to stop moisture seeping out. If it's a cold or windy day you could put the whole lot in a larger bag to give the plants a bit of protection.

Maybe wrap a sheet of card or paper round each pot to make a tube just above the plant to protect them then, tape the whole lot of pots together around the bottom and just pop them in a bag if you have other stuff to carry

The disappointing sequel to Snakes on a plane.

I've had a few plants through the post that the seller had packed newspaper or similar material around the base of the plant and then cut a ring of cardboard (with the centre cut out just enough for the plant stem) and taped that down tight over the newspaper to hold all the soil in place. They were then put into tubes like Jellyfire said above to protect the stem. They survived the post so should be good enough for the train.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

...My thoughts also.  Unless they are triffids perhaps?

  • Hope you and your plants arrived safe and sound. Btw, can someone recommend a reliable train company?

From what I can gather - four and a half years sounds about the normal waiting time for trains in the south east of England.... ;)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Traveling with succulents is totally doable. To keep them happy, wrap each pot with newspaper or bubble wrap to secure the soil, preventing any messy spills. For extra support, place them snugly in a sturdy box or a compartmentalized tray. Make sure it's well-ventilated to avoid overheating.
