How to go about making Shrubs bushier

Hi all, I bought some Pyracantha shrubs in Winter last year. planted them and hoped for the best. Thankfully they appear to be alive so I've given myself a good pat on the back.

This is how they look now, you can clearly see where growth has taken place. What i want, is to have it be thicker at the bottom but im not sure how to go about it.

I've read things like pruning the 'leader' i think it was called but i cant identify it or if it is even there.

Im not trying to make a tight hedge, but i do want a screen eventually.

All help appreciated

Thanks

If you cut some off the top, it will bush out more from the sides.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
