Whats this tree & plant?!!

*Astrantia**Astrantia* Posts: 307
We were away earlier in the week on the lovely Dorset coast we sat in a little park overlooking the sea and this tree was behind us & wonder what it is? Also a plant that looks like cow parsley is just coming up, assuming they are pretty hardy being on the coast? The underside of the tree leaves were silvery if that helps?

first one is a weed , can't remember the name, grows well in marshy areas. Lots around here in Devon / Cornwall.
Can't make out the second one , sorry.

Yes, Alexanders .... introduced to the UK by the Romans (hence the name) who cultivated it as a vegetable. The young shoots are quite tasty 😋

Could the tree be a Holm Oak, Quercus Ilex?

Ahh I’ve heard of Alexander’s but didn’t know what it looked like obviously! I’ll look up holm oak pictures, the leaves looked almost like a magnolia quite thick
