Prune hebe?

Got 2 hebe in my corner bed and I'd like to keep them nice and compact. It's surprisingly hard to show in the photos, even with me holding the leaves out the way, but they're a bit straggly further in-

Due to this my instincts say to just give them a light trim but some advice would be good.

Also, I planted them last April and they didn't flower in their first year, should I expect flowers this year? It's frozen flame and red edge- both should flower in the summer from what I've red.

  • As with any plant, I usually recommend prunning after flowering - you don't want to be cutting off this year's buds otherwise you will have to wait until next year for the plant to flower.  I usually give a light trim to my perennial plants giving the shrub a nice ball shape once the finished flowers have faded or dropped off..

I probably read something like that last year but then there were no flowers in the first place...

    Found this though- https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=168

Both are listed as this pruning group. Surely if it would stop flowering altogether that wouldn't be the case?
