Creating stone borders next to walls

Hi, I have some nice white walls in my garden, as the soil/grass is right up to my walls, the dirt from the soil is forever leaving my walls dirty.

I have decided to add some white limestone around the walls... I have lots of left over roof felt which I plan to use as a weed stopper and hopefully should stop the stone getting dirty.

Should I dig down a little or should I be ok just placing the felt on top of the grass?.... Also any tips for stopping the wind blowing the stone onto the grass?

Sorry, diy isn't my strong point.... How would you best tackle ir

How do you cut your grass? Do you need a hard edge to trim up against or anything to stop grass clippings getting stuck in the gravel? Also is there a damp-proof course on the house and how does the ground level compare to it?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I use a hand tool to cut grass by the walls... I have a edge trimmer, but it sprays all the grass all over my walls turning the walls green if grass is wet.

Not to sure... Walls seem to be same level as my house..

  • I'm open to suggestions if using stone isn't ideal.... Was just thinking it would be cheap and easy..

I would dig out the turf where the gravel is going to go, and definitely have some sort of edge; a row of bricks mortared in, or even treated timber pegged in place.

  • Thanks for suggestions :)

If I was just to grow more grass right up to my walls, could I sprinkle some sand on top of the lawn to hopefully stop the rain slashing the soil on my walls, or wouldn't that work?

If the top of the edging is flush with the lawn, it's much easier to keep the edge tidy as you can run the mower up to it...

  • Maybe I need to get a new mower as mines only cheap and doesnt seem to get the edges.

Think I'm gonna just grow grass and forget the limestone idea.

    Thanks all :)
