Coreopsis/Tickseed pruning advice

Hi All

Appreciate some advice here.

This Coreopsis produced an abundance of colourful flowers all of last summer.

It still had some foliage on it that lasted throughout winter, but much, unsurprisingly, died off. I've tried removing most of what was left, but am wondering how hard I should cut it back. I can see some fresh growth, but wonder if it'll be suffocated amongst all the older growth.

Not sure whether just to leave it, or prune away? The photo makes it look much healthier than it is. It could certainly do with a better shape, at least.

Thanks 😎

You could cut that right back to just a few inches.. and remove dead stems..

It ought to be outside too... I had one of these for some years, I got a bit fed up with it so no longer with me, but I just used to cut it right down in the winter to ground level, like a perennial, and it would shoot up again in Spring, like yours is doing..
This is the one I had.. forget the name.. I just sheared it all off at the base late autumn.. I did find that, in a pot, it needed a lot of watering, and wasn't as drought tolerant as I thought it would be...  best of luck...

  • Thanks. It is kept outside - I brought it in doors as it was dark and wanted a closer inspection. I plan on planting it in a larger pot with another Coreopsis (which, incidentally, seems to grow very differently?)

I have three of these, one is a perennial that totally disappears over winter, the other teo are more shrubby like yours. The bees love them so they are worth growing.

I agree, you cat give it a good cutting back now and that will stimulate fresh healthy growth.

Thanks, I gave it a good pruning.

As you say, my other Coreopsis had an entirely different experience, dying back entirely and now looking like this:
