Copper beech hedge

Our next door neighbour has just very harshly pruned the large copper beech hedge that divides our properties. He has massively reduced both its height and width. Is there anything l can do to help it recover

It is much better to reduce a hedge gradually but it should recover if it is well established. I would give it a good mulch - don't let the muck touch the actual trunks - and have a chat with the neighbour about managing it more sympathetically.

I agree with Posy ... I don’t think there’s cause for concern. Beech hedges are usually best kept close clipped as this increases the density of foliage so it sounds as if your neighbours are doing their best to get it right, even if it had got a bit out of hand earlier.
Ensuring that the base is clear of weeds and leaf-litter, a feed of Fish, Blood & Bone and mulching this spring and ensuring that it gets some generous watering in dry spells should ensure a healthy hedge in the future.
    😊

  • Brilliant, l am sure they have done their best. I will get mulching !!
