Rose - To cut back or leave?

Hi,

I'm looking for a little advice. now I have cut down a fir tree that was too large for my front garden I have found a rose, or it may be 2 separate that are basically 2 long stems (sorry no pics at present). They are seem to be healthy enough and last year produced a single flower on each stem. The flowers are really nice, but the plants look a little sad as 2 single stems. I would really like to encourage new bushier growth, but am a little nervous of cutting them back too drastically, as I would rather not lose them.

I'm reluctant to get too brutal with the secateurs without some advice.

regards,

G

How long are the stems?  I'd be inclined to cut both by half asap after which they should branch out.  Give them some rose food, then water them well, the soil is likely to be parched under the fir tree  It's difficult to actually kill roses, so be brave!

    Hi Lizzie,

Thanks for the advice. The fir tree has been down for a few months now so the ground is much more moist than it was. as I have 2 stems, I might cut one back and see how it goes.
