Tick bite prevention

For the past couple of years I get bitten by ticks once or twice a year - am unsure exactly where they are lurking in the garden but may well be the grasses around my pond - is there anything I can spray on the plants that is plant and fish friendly as know someone who has Lyme Disease so am worried every time this happens

Some people use Avon skin so soft oil to deter midges it may work on ticks, obviously you spray it on yourself and at least it smells nice?

You can buy anti-tick clothing, impregnated with Permethrin, if you don't mind a chemical solution.  As far as I know there isn't anything you can use on plants.  Do you have pets, and if so, are they treated regularly for ticks?  Or do you have deer visiting your garden?

  • Thanks for the advice, will have to check out those things 8-) we have rabbits but don't seem to be affected and no way for deer to get in to the garden so not sure where the ticks are coming from. I have heard they don't like garlic and wasn't sure if there was some sort of garlic spray infusion I could maybe make without actually planting garlic - clutching at straws now perhaps?!

Hedgehogs are often covered in ticks - not sure if they transfer to humans. Our cat has brought the first of the season into the house, luckily OH spotted it and dealt with it.

You need to buy a tick removal tool from a vets or pet shop, then you can make sure the whole body and head are removed when you see it on you.

The best way is to deny them the opportunity to attach to you in the first place, by always wearing long trousers, socks and covered shoes. Other than that I use Pyramid spray, mostly for mosquito defence but have never got a tick either. Dogs wear Scalibors, bit I’ve never fancied that myself.
