Surprised to see a fairy recommending a Rowan tree.

My very superstitious Scottish Grandmother always said to plant a Rowan in the front garden to keep the fairies away.

I always thought it was just witches  :D

The species [aucuparia] is  our 'national' tree up here, so I'm slightly biased. Tough and tenacious, just like us  ;)

I have Hawthorne and the green hazel growing together in my heavy clay soil, the hazel for winter interest and the Hawthorne for the blossoms which attracts bees, butterflies and birds for the berries.

Cold windy garden here with acidic clay soil. Amelanchier does well, as do hazels. Personally I'd go for the amelanchier for preference - pretty thing, just showing flower buds now - nice and early. It picks up where the flowering cherry leaves off. The birds love the berries.

I planted two Amelanchier Canadensis last autumn, we have very heavy clay soil here. We improved the soil as much as possible before planting, I hope they will survive. There are signs of buds so hopefully they are not dead yet!
