I'm sick of fighting this so considering letting it live but need to know what it is.  Scared it might be a massive shrub.  Anyone know what it is? Thx.

Is it a sucker from the roots of something growing nearby?

Yes i think it is but whatever that might be it's next door.  Is cotoneaster horizontalis grafted on root stock? Hmm..

It looks like a chaenomeles to me - a decorative quince.  They sucker like crazy.  Is there one within about 50ft?  Or an old stump that has been cut down?

I think you're right Helix, it looked familiar but could quite get there

Helix that looks like a good hit to me.  The roots are deep and the original gardener would have likely planted a quince there.  My neighbour has one that does well in same aspect so im going to chance it given this bit of knowledge.  It's not gone daft since march size wise and other stuff I've tried in that spot have failed as it's dry shade.  Thanks folks.
