  Hello robatworkuk. The tree looks as if it could be a spruce but as Paul B3 asks, a closer picture would help in identification.

  Sorry that's all I have, and can't get more as it was a visit to someone's garden. Any speculation welcome - I will google some spruces, thanks.

  Is the 'top-growth' in the right-hand picture possibly a more distant tree ????

  Looking at the left-hand picture the growth manner seems to resemble Pinus mugo , and I can't detect any of the background tree either .

  Very indistinct and hard to tell , but hope of some use to you !

  Having spent a few hours googling spruces and similar, I really like the Blue Spruce. I know this isn't one, but are there varieties of Blue Spruce that grow to about 5m high and spread no more than 2m?

  That's a beauty yes. My wife has also mentioned her love of Cedar - are there any varieties of those that grow to a similar height (5-10m)?

  As per Paul B3 link. Look for the word fastigiate in the names or search as that means narrow erect growth.
  Cedrus fastigiate   brings up a few. If you add the height you want you might fine one she likes.
