Problem lawn

I have an average lawn. I mow it regularly, fertilise ever couple of months in the growing seasons (aftetcut lawn thickener), water in dry spells and remove weeds whenever I see them.

However, my lawn has always been quite thin, some places more than others, and that’s something I want to sort out but have never been able to. I’m going to try putting the some grass seed down aswell as some top soil as I don’t think my soil’s the greatest - am I doing the right thing?

Hi Sam - it doesn't look that bad to me!
Is it just areas of wear and tear that you feel need resowing? I can't see what's nearby in that second pic - is it just an area that gets a lot of footfall?
You can certainly resow with a bit of topsoil, if you feel the grass is on the light side.
Is it quite a well drained site? If so, you can also leave the grass a little longer when you cut, which will help the grass to cope with drier conditions, and save watering.

Regular mowing should increase tillering which is the term used in turf culture for more side shoots and will thicken the lawn. Do not take off more than 1/3 of the growth at any one time little & often is better than a hard cut every now & then. As Fairy says you can over sow to increase the thickness as well, the grass does look like a very fine type so a boost with more seed will help.

  • Thanks this is all helpful
  • It is evident from the pictures that your lawn is in dire need of maintenance. You can do regular lawn mowing which will make the grass even in all areas. After removing shrubs, you can add weedkiller to the soil which will resist the growth of weeds. Install sprinklers to regularly water the plants and grass. If this does not work out, you can schedule a professional for lawn maintenance.

Just waiting for your advert now Richard ....

Oh - and adding weedkiller to the soil won't 'resist the growth of weeds'  :)

  • Thanks. I have ordered some grass seed from lawnsmith.co.uk (their ‘classic’ seed) and have put down a few bags on top soil over my lawn whilst I await the delivery, it was uneven in places so seems to have helped level it out at the same time. Certainly looks a mess now but guess it has to get worse to get better!

Add weed killer to soil??? Not very professional. I would pay more attention to fairygirl and allotment boy.
