Mine hasn't been wrapped but is in a pot in a sheltered spot waiting for a bog garden. It's been growing since that warm spell in Feb and hasn't been knocked back by the recent cold spell.
I knew a woman in Belgium, in their equivalent of the Yellow Book, who buried hers under a 3' high pile of garden compost in mid to late October and left it to it. It just grew thru it when ready. Better than fleece which is a pain, is unsightly and is made from plastic.

Mine has got huge and so I didn't cover it last winter thinking it would (hopefully) die off a bit - but it didn't bat an eye at the Beast from the East! I didn't cover it again this winter and I won't be covering it up ever again! It's already got a lot of new growth on it. (Glos).
May I suggest next autumn you cut the leaves down and form a wigwam over the centre of your Gunnera. Stalk end up. It makes a perfect natural protective covering. Leave on until all risk of frost has gone.
'Gunny' unwrapped today! 2 Lovely leaves sprouting, Will fleece up again if we get a short sharp spell as predicted for next week. Thanks for all the advice.
