Help something is eating my plants

Something is eating my plants that are kept in the shed, no mice as bait is untouched. Whatever it is is taking the new growth and leaving it, it's happening to my Canna's Hydrangea and I think Astilbe. Any thoughts? Also if I put fleece round the above plants and put them in a sheltered area would the be safe if we had a frost. I could rig up something so I could put some polythene over the so they don't get to wet. Failing that put them back in the shed every night. but main problem is what is nipping of the top of my plants and will they grow back. Thanks for any advice.

I wonder if it's a random slug or snail ?

Hi AnniD, I thought that at first so clear them all out, checked the trays which have gravel in them and nothing. I looked for slim trails and again nothing, I've even checked for ants. What ever it is seems to have taken all the shoots of my over winters Hydrangea cuttings. Wondering if it will be to cold at night still for me to leave them outside on my potting bench with several layers of fleece.

I think it would be too cold for the cannas to be honest, even with the fleece.Just wondering if you can borrow a mouse trap (a humane one if you prefer), just to check?

I'll as son to pick one up on his way home. It's funny though the Astilbe are fine. I'll put them back in for tonight and put some support cains in the tubs then put the fleece over that and see if any thing tries to get in again. If it's a hole it's must be a mouse if slime then it either snails or slugs. I've just checked around for mice dropping and nothing. I'm hopping that Canna will grow as it doesn't seem to be the whole new shoot just half.

AnniD, I have just wrapped all the Canna's in fleece with no gaps round the sides or top, imagine and upside down ice cream cone. I'll check tomorrow and see how they are. I somehow doubt it slug or snail as the work bench in the shed is ruff timber but you never know. Also I've put some bait next to the pot for now then when son get's home will also put the trap in there.

You and me both. Yes I'll let you know. I'll check when I get back tomorrow but will leave them wrapped till it's time for them to go outside. Just dug in three bags of sand as we have dark grey clay here smells a bit like gas yuk.

Son's just come in so I'll see what trap he's got, I hope it's the right one as although I don't like the I wouldn't want to kill it.
