Best use of wood ash

I have a wood-burning stove which I don't use very often, and I've always put the ash in the compost bin.  Today I emptied the bin, and the patches of ash, some of which had been in there two years or more, looked exactly as they did when I put them in.  Would it serve just as well to tip the ash straight onto the soil, and leave the rain to wash it in?

I found just the same with my compost bins. I was worried about too much potash if I tipped it straight onto the soil, so in the end I put it in the wheelie bin! Not sure if my worries were justified mind you ...

Someone has just answere d the same question on another thread.  Says it's ok to spread ash on the soil, but not directly around growing plants in case, as you say, you overdose them.  Not an issue for me, as the stove is mostly used outside the growing season!

If you can turn it regularly in your compost bin, it won't always be as a clump. It's good for your soil.
