Potato planting

If I have already got both earliest and maincrop seed potatoes can plant them at the same time, if not what to do with later ones?..

    Hi,

    Yes you can if the soil is not sodden.

    I have already planted my earlies, Dunluce and Premiere and hope to plant my main crop, Sante and Rooster in the next couple of weeks!

    Here in Gloucester it has been a mild winter and up to now a very dry one as well, so the soil has been in perfect condition for planting this season!

    Normally at this time the soil is usually sodden and heavy, not this year so I got on with it!

    I always worry about late blight, I don't know why because I have never suffered from it so I always think the sooner you get them in the ground the sooner you can harvest them.

    As soon as the weather improves our potatoes are going in, been chitting in the glasshouse fro a few weeks, even though the veg plot is over the bed of the old railway line to Porthcawl it is still sodden.

    Do potatoes need to be after the last frost, or just when it's nice and warm? Mine have just started chitting, and will be in containers.

    You can plant potato seed from the middle of March to middle of April, Scotland could be later. The leaves will emerge 3 or 4 weeks later if there's a risk of frost cover the leaves over but you will probably be earthing them up anyway, if the leaves do get slightly frost damaged the plants will recover.
