Black and curling rose leaves

I planted a new rose in the Autumn which I was pleased to see has started to come into leaf and all looked good.  However in the past week a few of the leaves have started to curl and become black.  I have been told this is due to the strong winds we have had recently, although I have also read that it could be too much feed.  We gave the hole some bfb mixed into the compost before planting and I have given it a couple of waterings in February with some feed mixed with the water (it was very dry in Feb and the leaf buds were forming) so I thought it was a good time to add a feed to the water. Can anyone tell me if the rose will survive and why the leaves are curling and blackening?

Cold wind/frost will do that to tender new leaves.

  • Is that the answer Dovefromabove?  If so you have saved my stress levels from rocketing.  I was so worried that somehow I had killed the poor rose which cost me an arm and a leg, thank you for re-assuring me. I am assuming the rose will recover in time?  The wind is supposed to drop so and not before time either!

We had that lovely mild spell didn’t we?  I bet your rose thought spring had well and truly come and summer was just around the corner and put out some lush soft and tender leaves ... then temperatures dropped like a stone ... had equivalent of you going out in your swimming cozzy and there being a sudden hailstorm 🙄

It’ ll recover and produce lots more leaves before very long. 😊

  • I look forward to seeing the new leaves soon Dove and yes I can understand the drop in temperature and strong winds would be a shock for any plant - the animals too - those poor birds that thought it was time to mate and then this change in the weather. Hopefully the weather has now calmed down, we certainly had a nicer afternoon although that strong wind is still hanging about here.
