fruit and veg sowing onions.

February issue GW mag, Monty, says if its too cold and wet to get your onions sets in, (it IS, heavy rain and winds) you can put them into a seed tray, first, make a small indentation, place the bulb, it doesnt mention watering the compost before or after, so has anyone tried this method, if so, dry or damp compost.

I would think you must water them, otherwise what’s the difference between keeping them in a cool dry place and putting them into cool dry compost??

i do that anyway as it produces roots that stop blackbirds janking them out of the ground when you do get them outside

I grow in cells, and place the tray in a solid tray part filled with water, this soaks up through the compost, don't indent the compost, when I plant the sets I push them into the compost.

Have just had a look at the onions, and several have in fact got roots an inch long!

Hi hi all I always start my sets off in modules just my way of getting off to a good start then plant when they have a root on. It does stop the birds from pulling them up
