I rooted some in a glass of water.

I have never tried rooting things in water. I've seen that it works with a lot of plants so may give it a try!

It got mixed in with some penstemons I was rooting. It's not 100% successful with gaura or penstemon every time but no effort or expense is involved so bung a few in water and put the others in soil.

Well I chopped it right back! Don't mind doing it now as I can protect it from anymore frost's.

However it does look drastic! On the gaura in the black pot, can you see how thick and woody one of the stems are!? I've chopped it right back but im not holding out much hope!  :/

I think it will be fine. I might even follow your example and chop mine back as soo as it stops raining.
