Missing buds?

Does anybody have any idea what causes this to happen to buds?

They looked quite plump and healthy back in November (this is Acer Palmatum Osakazuki planted in a fairly shady and reasonable sheltered spot).

    Agree with B3 or Blue Tits? They have been at my apple tree and Ornamental Cherry.

    Quite a lot of the buds are in this state, but the other maples around don't have the same problem.  I suppose this variety seems to produce "fatter" buds than the others ... ?

    Possibly the warm start to spring made them especially fat and tempting to the birds when the cold weather returned?

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
