She lives in Devon, different climate to The North and Midlands!
On Gardeners World they are always sowing seeds, never seem to show the end product though!
With the exception of a five year old who has never done it before, most could do it with their eyes shut, it's looks to me as they are just filling in time, total waste!
As Obelixx said, you have to factor in your own climate. It's usually through failures that many of us learn that! Coincidentally, I've just said exactly the same on another thread regarding the last frosts. Frost isn't the only weather problem either. A good way of finding out what works for you, is to sow a little of each plant [small tray, or a few small pots] and then repeat a few weeks later. Check the weather conditions and temps you've sown in and keep a record of it until you feel comfortable with what you do.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I have a small cold greenhouse,..i grow just about everything in it,..the greenhouse is in a sunny corner so the back and one side are against the house,..there are two sections like the one below,..i have to admit my garden is almost a Micro Climate,..several degrees higher in temperature than outside the garden,..protested from wind with lots of shelter,..the last snow on the ground was in 2018 and before that 2010,..like most posts here i agree with,..it depends on where you and your cold greenhouse are located,..but do experiment to see how seeds will react in your cold greenhouse.
Thank you for your help Philip. Very interesting, my greenhouse is south facing and protected from cold winds. Whilst I have taken the advice from other posters on here, which incidentally I really value, I have kept the majority of my seedlings, indoors on the dining room table, doing very well. Just to experiment I have left some dahlia seedlings in the greenhouse. So far they are doing very well. Long way to go though, so will interesting to see how they develop.
Perki, you have been peeking in my windows havent you! A lot of the seed packets say sow at 20d or more. I am in the SE 10 minutes from the sea, this time last year, the "Beast from the East", hit -12 2 nights running, my neighbours who have lived here since the 60s when the bungalows were built and other "locals" have never known such low temps.
