Can I ask if anyone has used milk cartons to sow seeds

I have been told that in parts of America they sow seeds in plastic milk cartons outside in winter. The cartons act as mini greenhouses. I wonder if anyone has tried this and if they were successful. I intend to try it and I will report back.
