    Thanks for the advice.  I won't be digging up without waiting to see if it recovers.  Although it must be at least 30 years old which I'm guessing is about the maximum time they live so may have to think about getting another one anyway in case this doesn't recover.  We've been here almost 5 years and until this year it has been lovely.
