Identify shrub against wall

jaffacakesjaffacakes Posts: 434
Hi all,

I need your help to identify this strange shrub just coming into leaf against my side passage wall. It's a house i just bought and i am more or less able to identify most shrubs but this one is puzzling me. It's about 6 foot tall and has peeling bark. Thanks.

Ah thank you. I thought it might have been common shrub. Most of them are in this garden. At least it's mature though  Probably Fuchsia Riccartonii i guess?

Is that an old gas pipe at the bottom of the wall? The hardy fuchsias can be pruned right down in the spring once new shoots are coming through at the base. I would be rather inclined to prune it hard and dig it up, moving it forward at least 2ft away from the wall which would be much better for it if you have the space.

Yeah, i think it's the gas going to the boiler which is in a boiler house in garden. Not sure though because it was oil tank before and converted to gas now.

I really didn't think about moving it. I have gaps in the garden that i'd love to move it to. I was worried it is too large and thought the roots would be huge. There isn't much space in this area for it though. I guess i could take cuttings too for other parts of garden. There is 3 cotoneasters growing nearby and they are ok because they are growing mostly horizontally.
