KNIPHOFIA UVARIA GRANDIFLORA

I have just had a delivery of a box of bulbs roots and rhyzomes with no information on when or how to plant. I understand I can plant the bulbs in May if I keep them in a cool place, the Canna I can plant inside now in pots and keep them for a month or so before planting out and I am stuck on the Knophofia roots . I have no idea what to do   Any advice please

I previously posted this a few minutes ago  and must have pressed a "spoiler" button whatever that is or may have done so I apologise for that

I think I would pot them up too for now.  What is your soil like?
    Is it workable?
    How big are they?
Sorry for the questions but it will help others to give you a better answer.

I have some Kniphophia in pots I bought last year. They are outside but not planted in the ground yet.
I do intend to put them out this year, but having clay soil I often baulk at putting things out until warm if I am not sure.

Pot them up. There is no time in the plants natural life when it has its roots open to the air

Yes, l wouldn't plant them straight into the ground yet, pot them up and keep them somewhere sheltered, say by the house wall for now.
  • Thanks They are in  bags of soil. The roots run for over 20cm and all have shoots about 10 cm long so what size pots do you reckon ( width and height). I can keep them outside under a sort of lean to at the back of the house  and then plant them out say in May?

I would cut them into two or three bits each increase your stock and pot up in 6" 150mm pots if you have them just any old compost or even garden soil keep outside frost free corner they will soon get away.

I have just ordered some Kniphofia (Wrexam Buttercup) in 9cm pots, which I will pot on to 2L pot. @Rubytoo, is there a reason you haven’t planted yours out yet? Is it better to keep growing in pots for a season before planting them out? I had assumed I would plant them out in early May...

@Nollie yes, my reason is as above we have clay soil, and also I don't have space for them in a good spot yet.
Sorry I should have put it better rather than rambling.

If I get plants late and am not sure if the conditions are the best for them,  I keep them in pots until the clay warms up in spring.

Also I got the kniphophia to go into part of the garden with tree works planned there was no point having to move them or get squished. Hence the pots.

Sorry Unionworkeruk.  It is my first try with these plants too, so Good Luck with yours and you too Nollie.

Thanks rubytoo, will see how big they grow by May. I too have clay soil, but there is probably more manure and compost than clay now, in the intended spot.
