Is this rose stem dead?

CraighBCraighB Posts: 758
Hi guys,

I have some roses and most of the stems have got lovely fat buds on them however there are some that don't have any signs of a shoot at the end at all. However further down the stem it does have buds, so do these need cutting back or should I  leave them a while to see if they start to bud?

Thanks

Theres no harm in giving them some time, just to see you never know.🙂

You can scratch it with your fingernail and see if it's green under the bark.

I can see the buds, so in that case, I would leave them alone. You could always prune out the stems where you see no growth later in the year, so there is no need to be in a rush to shorten or remove stems without any new buds, there may be a slight delay in growth.

No it's not dead, but at this time of year I prune stems back to where there is a very clear bud shooting out..  if no shoots are visible on a cane, I leave them a while longer until they appear..
