Is my acer palmatum dead?

Last year my acer palmatum, which is about a metre tall, suffered badly in the drought with all its leaves being “frazzled”.  So far this year no buds are visible, though another acer of a similar size and three in pots all have small buds.  My husband keeps telling me my lovely acer is dead, but l don’t want to give up on it.  Might it still produce buds or is it likely to be dead?

Give it a few more weeks.  I have two big ones outside in pots and one has lots of lovely new foliage starting to open and the other has no buds open yet.   Same with the smaller ones I moved to the polytunnel for winter.   They are different types and get regular feeding and watering as appropriate.

If yours does re-grow, be sure to feed it some slow release organic fertiliser as well as regular drinks and maybe some liquid seaweed.  Don't let it get thirsty this summer.

Are there no leaf buds showing yet?

Agree with @Lantana ‘s idea. If the branches are grey and dry then those bits are gone but any sign of green is good. 🤞🏼
