Lawn hiding a multitude of sins

So we bought this house last year, and back lawn wasn't doing well. We noticed the ground itself was very uneven and sunken, and the grass patchy at best. Hoping it was just badly compacted, I tried the 'stick a fork in and wiggle' method all over but kept hitting a lot of hard objects and the lawn didn't improve any. Long…

These days if you leave any old metal item out in the front garden it will disappear fairly quickly. Our old washing machine drum went in a couple of days.
