  Is it an ex-Christmas tree?  Was it truly pot grown or had it been dug up with half its roots chopped off,  plonked in a pot, stood in a dry heated house for a couple of weeks without being misted or watered, then stood outside for a few weeks and ignored .... then planted?
  
  Sorry, but if my guess is right I’m not surprised it looks half dead ... but the first good news is that’s probably the good news  ‘cos if it lives it’ll soon be way way too big for that spot

  I had my doubts about it from the off. Any ideas for a good replacement for that spot - I'm looking to screen the area a little and probably 2-3 feet high eventually (possibly even more?).

  All sorts of small shrubs are available ... but you’ll need to clear a decent sized area of soil ... no shrub will be happy with grass growing right up to its stem ... the grass competes for nutrition and water. 
  
  I take it you want some sort of evergreen that can be kept trimmed to the size you want ... the first one that comes to mind is Lonicera nitida ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ ... but there are loads more ... I’m sure you’ll get lots of suggestions 😊
