camellia flowers dropping

Every year my camellia forms numerous perfect buds, which progress to produce perfect flowers with no blemishes whatsoever, however these drop off within a day or so. This happens even in benign weather conditions. It is sited near a north west facing wall, in southern UK. The soil is acidic. I have reviewed numerous articles relating to buds forming and falling off, and flowers that are blighted in some way, but none that explain my experience. Advice appreciated please.

Thirsty?  In the shelter of that wall it will be in the rain shadow.

  • You could be right, although the shrub is very healthy in appearance, and also it is producing numerous buds, both of which seem to suggest that it is not short of water. There are other varieties of shrubs (not camellias) that are in a similar position, that all seem to be thriving...
Will be giving it more water anyway - appreciate you comments.

When short of water, camellias sacrifice their flower buds in favour of conserving resources for the stems and foliage.   I expect yours thinks it's OK to flower but not keep them for long.  Try watering it.  It's been a dry winter in some areas and the wall will suck up moisture even in a wet winter.

I think it mentioned on some programme that if the plants were short of water in Autumn when the buds were forming that can lead to bud drop.
