Hi all, am following this discussion with interest as have had problems establishing anything on a shady bank in clay soil by my house wall that only gets a short burst of early morning sun. Would Epimedium be the answer? Have tried Vinca (which is still ok but not really spreading yet), and a few Japanese anemones are doing ok but it neeeds a filler plant. What do you think?
Thank you everybody for sharing your knowledge and experience about this plant. I will definitely be getting Lamium orvala. As to lamium purpureum I will get it too, but plant it in a pot to see how quick it spreads. Both seem great for bees and bumblebees, so well worth trying. There seem to be much fewer bumblebees this year so I was very concerned about it and started looking for early flowering plants to feed them during spring months.
@Big Blue Sky , you could maybe try pulmonaria "Blue Ensign" if that would be suitable. I have several of these and there were bumblebees all over them yesterday

I got it last year 😊 That was the beginning of my “bumblebee-nisation of my garden. They are so beautiful that I got white ones this year too (Sissinghurst white I think they are called). Thank you for mentioning it though Anni, I’m sure it will be useful for others. I can confirm that bees and bumblebees love it 😊
