I use chicken pellets as a general top dressing in spring before applying mulch. I use well rotted horse manure in the same way in autumn minus the mulch and also pop some in with any shrubs or roses or perennials I plant. I mix slow release pellets in with tubs and baskets when planting up and good old tomato food for tomatoes, peppers etc or to give flowering plants a boost mid summer. Quite a mish mash but it all seems to work well. I won’t use any type of herbicide or insecticide use nematodes for slugs etc and consider myself fairly organic. Did try to make nettle tea as an organic liquid feed but the appalling stench put me off! Sorry!

I had a go at comfrey tea a few years ago Debs64, by the 'eck, that was pretty whiffy. I kept it in a covered bucket at the bottom of the garden, but l swear l could smell it from the back door. I used it a few times, well diluted as instructed,  but to be honest I just couldn't stand it and threw the rest away .

I knocked the bucket over onto my feet! Had to throw my shoes and socks and jeans away! Expensive!

I decant it off into 2l plastic pop bottles once it is ready.  Not a nice job but means a year-round supply and no lingering stink around the garden, with a bit of plastic recycling throw in for free (bottles have lasted 10 years or more.)  Bit pongy when opening a bottle to pour a bit into a watering can of course, but that's it.   Comfrey tea and well-rotted FYM is all I ever use in the garden and greenhouses by way of fertilizer and with excellent results I have to say.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
