Roots or rhizomorphs?
I'm digging out the stumps of some dead Leylandii that I cut down at the end of last year. I'm intending to put in a hedge of crab apple, quince and damson, so am naturally concerned to avoid honey fungus in the soil. One of the stumps has other roots around it. Some are clearly identifiable as being from another plant that was growing in the same spot. Others are more concerning. I attach some photos - are these roots, or fungal rhizomorphs? And if the latter, have I honey fungus, or something else? I've peeled back the bark of the stump; the tell-tale sheet of white, mushroom-smelling fungus is absent, though I've only got the below-ground part of the stump to go on so I don't know if that's conclusive. There are some small white fungal spots on the outside of the bark. Any advice would be very welcome.
