So pleased for you, you’re well away now.

I would spread that as soon as you can, it’s perfect to put on the garden now and the worms will do the job of taking it down and mixing it in. No need to dig.

Nothing like freshly-voided human urine for getting a reluctant compost heap going.

I tried several ways of making leaf mould before I hit on a winning formula.  Plastic mesh - too dry; bin bags - too wet.  A friend gave me some "bio-degradable" jute sacks intended for the purpose: alas they rotted faster than the leaves.  Last year I reverted to the plastic mesh cylinders, but lined and topped them with a double layer of corrugated cardboard.  The result was perfect.

    I use buidlers' dumpy sacks

    Builders dumpy sacks here too.

I also spread the gathered leaves on the lawn and then mow the lawn to get a mix of chopped leaves and grass clippings which help speed the procedure. At this time of year the grass never completely dries out so everything goes in nice and damp. Perfect.

Same here, builders bags for the final storing, but wooden bins firsts as they are warmer.

  • Black rubbish sacks filled with leaves, topped up with water, holes pierced in bags, tied with string and left for a year or two, slow but reliable for us.
  • Builder's dumpy sacks?
Presume this is referring to the nylon mesh 1t aggregate maxi bags?
Interesting, I have one of those.
Won't this obstruct critters migrating into it? or do we not depend on worms and such  to create leaf mould?
